The Song of the Agunah

by

(Music, Benjie Ellen Schiller, additional text Benjie Ellen Schiller; Psalm 116:8, 118:5; Book of Ruth, 1:16)

Bonded by love inspired from Above.
Walking together, loving forever,
cherish and honor ‘til death do us part.

Walking through time, weakened, maligned.
Empty and broken, words left unspoken,
bonded forever, questioning why.

From the dark narrow place I cry out to You,
answer me, bring release.
Truly, return my soul from death, my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.

Now I’m alone, seeds I have sown.
No understanding, only demanding, where is the honor?
Where is the shame?
Once bonded by love, now enslaved by a law.
Now I am chained, imprisoned, restrained,
bonded by force with no way to divorce!

From the dark narrow place I cry out to You,
answer me, bring release.
Truly return my soul from death, my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following after you.
I will go where thou lodgest I will lodge.

From the dark narrow place I cry out to You,
answer me, bring release.
Agunah, agunah, chains that link become chains that bind.
Agunah, You must not be resigned.

From the dark narrow place I cry out to You,
answer me, bring release.
Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following after you.
I will go where thou lodgest I will lodge.
From the dark narrow place I cry out to You,
answer me, bring release.
Truly return my soul from death, my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
