10 Av 5775 (July 26, 2015)

After reading several of Danny Gordis’s “dispatches,” I needed to share my thoughts with him, as I have done over the years. I did this by way of the Wexner Foundation ListServe. I have yet to see it published. I have circulated this “Open Letter” to several of my friends in Israel and here whose opinions I highly value. I am speaking up because I sense that there are others who feel as I do. First the newest piece of poetry for SRSS, the result of all my processing of the situation......

Israel. Iran. The United States. Women of the Wall. Another Rosh Hodesh Av and another utterly offensive and obnoxious display of Jewish Police Power. Where are the rational and sane voices of Israel? Too busy making sure that FEAR is the only emotion the Jewish people should feel right now? What about some SHAME that the police power of the Jewish State continues to bow to the fear and hate of a Religious Establishment that is anti-women. Iran – I have no ability to change the course of events, right now. THE......

10 Tammuz 5774 (July 8, 2014)

In these very dark days, I pray that the escalating violence will subside as all parties realize there is no gain from death and destruction. While Israel struggles to maintain safety, security and strength during these days, I also pray that the Iron Dome continue to do its work in the air. Oh Iron Dome, protect our Home, any nashir, shir hashalom....

17 Adar II 5774 (March 19, 2014)

As this very long winter finally fades into a very early, chilly spring here in Cleveland, our friends and family in Jerusalem look forward to the cleaning frenzy that marks the weeks before Pesach.  Which isn’t to say, of course, that we who live outside Israel don’t worry about getting all in order for our annual spring holiday.  The difference is that in Israel, what is essentially a religious ritual becomes shared public behavior and everyone in the country, embraces National Spring Cleaning!  If that is part of what it means to......

4 Kislev 5774 (November 7, 2013)

On the first day of Kislev, 5774, also known as Nov. 4, 2013, I joined over 800 women (and men standing by our side in support) at the Women of the Wall’s Rosh Hodesh service at the Kotel.  This was the first time I have been with WOW since Judge Moshe Sobel’s historic ruling last April.  To say that there has been a sea change is an understatement.  Rather than arresting women for wearing tallitot, rather than instructing women to wrap their tallitot like scarves and instructing us to sing softer, the......

3 Kislev 5774 (November 6, 2013)

WOW has made a historic decision to essentially accept the “Sharansky Plan,” provided ALL the conditions are met.  Until such time as all the conditions are met, WOW will continue to meet on the Women’s Side of the existing Kotel plaza.  The struggle is far from over as social change is a PROCESS.  Also, let us not forget, this is not only the Middle East, this is the evolving Jewish State. Looking forward to how WOW’s historic decision will impact the Israel conversation at the USCJ’s Conversation of the Century.  Clearly, religious......

5 Heshvan 5774 (October 9, 2013)

Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, which WOW celebrated at the Kotel on Friday morning, Oct. 4, was indeed a bitter morning for our Sisters at the Kotel.  While from afar it looked as if WOW’s minyan was undisturbed for the first time in years, in fact, those involved in the minyan were VERY DISTURBED by the unbuffered behavior of those who object to WOW’s presence at the Kotel.  In Cleveland, 30 of us gathered from around our Jewish community, at Beth El-Heights Synagogue.  Linked to WOW by Shulamit Magnus, Vivian Singer and other core......

5 Heshvan 5774 (October 9, 2013)

I am VERY VERY PROUD to be a part of the WOW Sisterhood.  This was not an easy decision but it reflects the Sharansky Plan which in my opinion, is very balanced.  It is important to note that WOW will continue to gather as usual in the Women’s Section until the clearly articulated conditions have been met by the Israeli government.  THIS IS SOCIAL CHANGE BEFORE OUR VERY EYES.  Passionate Zionists need to raise their voice and give support to this plan as change will not come easy.  Those who do not......

1 Elul 5773 (August 7, 2013)

Hodesh tov to all.  I have been attempting to link the JTA account of this morning but technologically inept as I seem to be, I am having difficulty.  However, if you go to WOW’s website, I am sure there are links to that and other articles by now.  WOW also mastered livestreaming which is of course captured on video. This morning in Cleveland we gathered at Park Synagogue East, joining with their daily minyan.  Rabbi Sharon Marcus is a great friend of WOW and is one of the pillars of our monthly......

6 Tammuz 5773 (June 14, 2013)

I write this entry on Friday afternoon, sitting in my garden in Jerusalem.  The noise of the Formula One exhibition, race cars zipping around the the city, juxtaposing one of modern man’s favorite leisure activities with the antiquity of the Old City Walls, is over.  Rather novel to hear the “vroom, vroom, vroom” in this place, where usually we hear, in addition to the birds, the church bells, the Muslim call to prayer and the cacophony of different languages. Once again, a metaphor appears, one that makes me chuckle, as I think......
